Four Killed in Pune Police Firing

This incident that has again raised the need for  serious police reforms in the country. Four people were killed  in the police firing with the usual explanation of police ‘Self Defence’. For past more than 60yrs since the independence this had been police’s usual explanation.
We will be amused to know police need deadly 7.62mm and 5.56 ammo to quell the stone throwing protesters. These are the weapons to kill and not for law and order control.
The lack of accountability in police for the death of an innocent, the old colonial mentality, lack of use and understanding of non-lethal force, old crowd and riot control methods,  disrespect for a human life,  violent mentality of society (from where these police people emerge) and in many cases public support are main reasons for such incidents.
Normal departmental procedure has been till now is to suspend the cop who is responsible for shooting, but now we need a system which makes these cops accountable for the human life under the law of Torts and Criminal i.e. if found guilty the cop should be made to pay the compensation to the victim and should be prosecuted under the required sections. We also need a better riot and crowd control procedure which till now has been almost similar to old colonial ways.
